The word grog originally referred to a drink made with water and rum, which the British Vice Admiral Edward Vermon introduced into the naval squadron he commanded in the West Indies in 18th Century. The name "grog" originates from the nickname of the Vice Admiral who was known as "Old Grog". In late 18th century lime juice and sugar was introduced into grog as means to fight savoury that was surging the sailors in their long journeys.
And that's the story of how one of the very first mixed drink was born..
